Skin Solutions Vitiligo - The Most Common Comorbid Diseases with Vitiligo

Skin Solutions Vitiligo

Skin Solutions Vitiligo is a disorder where white patches of skin appear on different parts of the body, due to the fact that the cells that make pigment in the skin are destroyed. It’s a common condition, but definitely not one that is easy to live with - especially since there aren’t a lot of great treatments out there that serve as a good fix.

A new topic that has recently come to light is the occurrence of comorbidity (having two simultaneous diseases) in vitiligo patients. In a new study, researchers characterized comorbid autoimmune conditions in patients with vitiligo. 1028 vitiligo patients who were seen in a single institution over a 10-year period were studied, and it was found that nearly 20% of them had comorbid autoimmune conditions.

That’s no small figure, especially considering that the sample size is not that large. In addition to this, they were also found to be older,  had a later onset of vitiligo, and longer duration of the disease, compared to those who did not have comorbid conditions.

These were the most common comorbid conditions found:

  1. Thyroid disease (12.3%)

  2. Alopecia(hair loss) (3.8%)

  3. Psoriasis (2.2%)

Now, while it’s no surprise to see thyroid disease on this list, I am surprised to see alopecia and psoriasis follow as well. As a result, this is good information to have and should be an indicator for dermatologists to broaden their scope of questioning when talking to presumably healthy vitiligo patients. In addition, directed thyroid testing is recommended for those with any signs or symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
