How to Stay Healthy During the Holidays (Part 2)

It’s hard to believe that Christmas is only 12 days away, right? And yet, you know that we don’t have to wait for the holidays to dig into the turkey, pies and everything delicious in between. December is the month of office parties, family visiting us in Nashville and a general tendency to cozy up with big meals or any way we know how! But before you succumb to all those temptations, we have more tips to share that will help keep what’s unnecessary at bay. (Missed our post last week? Read it here.)

Holiday Help #3: Start small, then increase intake slowly.

If we all started our meals with chocolate cake, we’d have no room for the main course! When it comes to the Nashville holiday food platters, buffets and dinner parties, we tend to pick at the first things we see, rather than make healthier choices.

Solution: The best way to navigate the smorgasbord of food is to eat low to high! This means starting with a light soup or salad, moving on to lean protein and by the time you get to dessert, it won’t take a lot of food to help you feel satisfied.

Holiday Help #4: Don’t wait all day for one big meal.

Are your parents or grandparents in Nashville cooking up a big dinner you’re looking forward to? Although we often like ourselves that we’re “saving our appetite”, nothing could be worse! By forcing ourselves to stay hungry, our blood sugar levels plummet and leads to an increase in our cortisol levels, which in turn churns out those cravings for fatty, salty and sugary foods.

Solution: Instead of trying to fast until dinner, munch on healthy snacks like fruit, nuts and raw vegetables. That way, you won’t be be feeling bloated or eat more food than you should by gorging on one big meal!
