Could This Pill Cure Female Pattern Hair Loss?

Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is one of the most challenging situations for both dermatologists and patients as we’ve seen in Nashville - not only is it extremely difficult to treat, but it’s also quite distressing for the patient to deal with on a daily basis.

In our Nashville practice, we typically offer topical minoxidil formulated with topical finesteride, with an option to include spironolactone, if they are open to trying oral medications. A lot of FPHL patients don’t like using topical medications in their hair nightly.  A group of researchers set out to discover if using an oral combination of minoxidil and spironolactone would prove to be more beneficial.

In an open-label, uncontrolled study of 100 patients, they were given a combined oral pill that contained low-dose minoxidil (0.25 mg) and spironolactone (25 mg) to treat FPHL. Their results showed a good response, with significant reduction of hair shedding in three months, and improved hair thickness within six months. The treatment also seemed to be well-tolerated, with only 8 of 100 patients experiencing side effects such a low blood pressure.

Even though the oral pill tested in the study didn’t make a big fuss about the risk of low blood pressure, it is important to realize that there could still be challenges with adopting this regimen. Unfortunately, this pill isn’t available commercially as yet, and a portion of the patients tested also experienced an initial shedding phase. Finally, this kind of minoxidil does lead to increased hair growth - which isn’t just restricted to the scalp, unfortunately.
